Buttons in my Excel Worksheet no longer work

In early December, 2014 a number of our customers started reporting an issue with some of our Excel spreadsheets. Basically that the buttons on those worksheets were no longer working. We have now determined that this problems is a direct result of a Microsoft security update (KB2553154), that has inadvertently disabled the capability of the buttons within all Excel workbooks on the affected computers.

Here is a screen shot from an Excel workbook that uses a button to execute a macro. If your computer has been affected by the Microsoft security update then the button will not function.

XLAutomation goes to the northern tip of Australia - Thursday Island

Thursday Island Pharmacy owner Mick Delaney came to XLAutomation with the need to turn their raw data into a set of functional and usable reports. The project involved the creation of an Excel Reporting Workbook that provided access to functions and macros to import, format and produce the required reports. These reports included picking slips, shelf labels, a standard drug list and order forms.

Free Useful Macros Workbook

A new Free Excel workbook has been uploaded to the Free Spreadsheets & Templates section of our website.

This new workbook includes a series of macro's that automate tedious and laborious Excel tasks. The macro's have been developed by the XLAutomation consulting team in an effort to speed up our spreadsheet development. We hope that you find these macro's useful in your workbooks. The first macro to be included is.....

UnMerge & Duplicate
This macro will unmerge cells and duplicate the data from the merged cells into each cell in that merged cell. It is particularly useful when you receive a worksheet that includes many merged cells that you want to convert and use in a pivot report.

XLAutomation goes Google

At XLAutomation we recently reviewed our use of email, document storage and backup. Like many small businesses we had started with the available tools like Microsoft Office that existed on our desktop computers. 

In an effort to make our business more mobile and to improve our backup capabilities we looked into "cloud based" offerings that could deliver an environment in which our email, calendars, documents could be available whenever and wherever we might need them. 

There are solutions that focus on file based synchronisation to the cloud but don't offer email and calendaring (eg Dropbox, SugarSync). The one solution we looked at that could deliver everything we were looking for was Google Apps for Business. For a monthly cost of $5 per user we now have the following services available to all staff at XLAutomation
  • Email - delegated access
  • Calendar
  • File storage - with the ability to share and collaborate with Team Members and Customers
  • Google Documents - a different approach to Office documents that we will be extending to our Customers
  • Website - we have just launched our website using Google Sites which has removed the need for hosting and a separate Content Management System
Google Apps for Business

One of the features we have been most impressed with is the support you receive when you encounter a problem. It can start with email or a phone call and the response is immediate and usually solves the issue in the first call. For me this is one of the main reasons I would recommend Google Apps for Business to others.

Job Scheduling Project completed for T&T Kitchen Design

A recent project success story for the XLAutomation development team

T&T Kitchen Designs came to XLAutomation with a need to automate the scheduling of jobs for his kitchen design business. They had a standard job timeline that was split between back office, workshop and installation activities. They wanted a solution that would calculate the next available slot for a new job and then schedule those activities into a calendar for his staff to work from.
